Privacy
Last updated 11 September 2026. Alif Ba Ta Tha is a product of Barro Services LLC. Families in the European Union: there is an addendum for you — the controller, where the data is, and what you can ask for under the GDPR.
Most of the people who learn here are children, and what we hold about them is their name, their progress, and sometimes their voice. This page says exactly what we collect, why, how long we keep it, and what you can ask us to do with it — in the same words the app asks you to agree to.
- We do not advertise, and we never will.
- We do not sell or share your family's information with anyone for advertising.
- Our published take rate only ever falls — never rises without notice.
- Seats sponsored by sadaqah are means-tested and passed through in full.
What we collect about your child
- Your child's first name or nickname, birth year, and the riwayah and primer they learn from — to set up their lessons.
- Their progress: pages tested, the words a teacher marked, homework, and the teacher's notes — so you and the teacher can see how they are doing.
- Recordings of one-to-one lessons, when you allow them — kept on Alif Ba Ta Tha for 12 months, visible to you, never downloadable by the teacher.
- During practice, the recitation assistant listens on the phone itself. The audio is not kept or sent anywhere unless you separately allow it below.
- Nothing about your child is sold or shared for advertising. Teachers see only what they need to teach.
We ask for a birth year, never a date of birth. There is no login for a child: everything about them is read and written under your account, and the database itself enforces that no other family, and no teacher outside your lessons, can reach it.
What we ask your permission for
Three separate questions, each with its own answer, each changeable at any time from the Family tab. Every answer is kept as a dated record of what was agreed.
Recording. Every one-to-one lesson with a child is recorded. That is a safeguarding rule, not an option we can switch off for a lesson: the recording is how you can see what happened, and how we make sure no harshness ever reaches a child. Recordings stay on Alif Ba Ta Tha, are visible to you, are never downloadable by the teacher, and are deleted after 12 months. If you don't allow recording, your child can still practise with the app; live lessons wait until you do.
The recitation assistant. The recitation assistant runs on the phone and forgets the audio when practice ends. If you allow it, short clips of your child's recitation may be kept to make the assistant better at hearing children's voices. This is separate from lessons and off unless you turn it on. You can turn it off any time; clips already used are removed at the next training run.
Children under 13
Before we create a child’s profile we ask the parent or legal guardian to read the list above and agree to it. We ask a second time, in a different way, when you first pay for lessons — the card in your name is the second check that you are the parent. We do not create a profile for a child under 13 without that agreement, and you can withdraw it at any time, which closes the child’s profile and deletes what is in it.
If you believe a child has given us information without your agreement, write to privacy@alifbataza.com and we will delete it.
How long we keep things
Lesson recordings are deleted automatically 12 months after the lesson; nobody has to remember to do it.
Who else sees it
Teachers see your child’s first name or nickname, their progress, and the lesson itself — live, and its recording if you allowed one. They never see your contact details and they can never download a recording. Beyond that, we use a small number of companies to run the service, and none of them is an advertiser:
We do not sell your family’s information, we do not share it for advertising, and we run no advertising or analytics trackers in the app.
What you can ask us to do
You can read every permission on file with its date, change your answers, add or remove a child, ask for a copy of everything we hold about your family, or ask us to delete it. The first three you can do yourself in the Family tab; for a copy or a deletion, write to privacy@alifbataza.com and we will answer within 30 days.
How we protect it
Permissions are enforced by the database, not by the app: every request runs as the person who signed in, and a row that is not theirs is not returned to them. Recordings live in private storage and are opened only through short-lived links we sign for you. Teachers are vetted in layers — identity with a liveness check, credentials confirmed with the institution that granted them, a graded audition, references, and a probation period in which every lesson is recorded. Every lesson with a child is recorded, and one tap on any lesson raises a flag that a person reviews within a day.
